This book, Ando Keskküla: Reality and Technodelics, accompanies a retrospective solo exhibition of the same name at the Kumu Art Museum (22 May to 13 September 2020). Both the exhibition and this book are part of a series dedicated to the classics of Estonian art, which is being published to honour iconic Estonian artists from the second half of the 20th century whose work has had far-reaching impact on local art life.

The artists who have already been featured in the museum’s classics series include Tõnis Vint, Raul Meel, Jüri Okas, Leonhard Lapin and Andres Tolts. Ando Keskküla (1950–2008), a painter, installation artist and video artist, also played a central role among these Estonian conceptual innovators from the same generation and circle of friends. Keskküla’s creative side was defined by his membership in the avant-garde art group SOUP ’69, his hyperrealistic paintings, and his interest in new technologies and their impact on our sense of reality. By the 1990s, he had developed into an advocate for interactive and interdisciplinary media and electronic art in Estonia. Keskküla’s administrative ability was demonstrated by his management of the Estonian Artists Association from 1989 to 1992 and by serving as Rector of the Estonian Academy of Arts from 1995 to 2004.
