The catalogue on the collection of one of Estonia’s most important art collectors, Johannes Mikkel (1907–2006), brings readers the museum curators’ selection of the collection’s gems, introducing works that are deeply connected with European art history. The book also covers many works of questionable authorship and date, including copies, repetitions and works that have yet to be discovered, all of which, in their inimitable fashion, characterize the multi-layered nature of art history and Mikkel’s hopes, expectations and love for art. The museum dedicated to the Mikkel art collection was opened in 1997 as a branch of the Art Museum of Estonia in the former kitchen building of Kadriorg Palace.
