Elo Viiding’s book “Margaret and Kadriorg” is a beautiful, at the same time thoughtful and vivid overview of the history and present of the 300-year-old Kadriorg. This is a story about the walks of Kadriorg, the opposing mother and child, and the meetings with the residents there. Step by step, page by page, the soul of Kadriorg, the essence of the old castle park and settlement, opens up in the book. Blooming apple blossoms, crosses and witchcraft, mythology and a real dwarf, Japanese garden and garden pond pebbles, moving and immovable time, stories of Peter I and Catherine, pans, gods and dice, old villas and horse trams and of course art and art life, life in art and literature all this is told in this little book.

The book is suitable for a child to read aloud as well as for self-discovery as a parent or family and a friend of Kadriorg. Mother’s simple explanations of difficult things to Margaret make the description of Kadriorg’s world and life easy for children to understand, offering new knowledge. Margaret’s direct statements and childish whims direct adults to feel more deeply the secret and wisdom of growing up with a child, to consider themselves and the child.

Elo Viiding’s book inspired by Kadriorg, the history of the castle and park, cultural institutions, nature and people is exceptional in the background of all previous Kadriorg-themed books – it was written by a poet and writer, not a (art) historian or naturalist.

The book “Margaret and Kadriorg” has been published at Kadriorg 300. with the support of the Estonian National Culture Foundation and the Estonian Cultural Endowment.
