The Kadriorg Art Museum is the only museum in Estonia specialising in European and Russian art from the 16th to the 20th centuries. The museum building – the Kadriorg Palace – was initially built as a summer residence for the Russian emperor Peter the Great. The most important national collection of European and Russian art in Estonia and the Baroque-style Kadriorg Palace together create a distinct narrative about international art in a local context. The Kadriorg Art Museum and the Kadriorg Palace – both the museum’s permanent collection and temporary exhibitions, as well as the palace architecture and interiors – speak for themselves and off er aesthetic and intellectual enjoyment even without any supplementary reading. But we do hope that, with the help of this guide, visitors will better understand the distinctive qualities of our permanent collection and the works of art it contains, as well as learn more about the Kadriorg Palace, a unique example of world-class Baroque architecture in Estonia, and its three hundred years of history. A museum guide is like a miniature museum, enclosed within covers, that you explore in order to gain new knowledge and remember the works of art that you saw on your visit to the museum.
