The jubilee issue of the Proceedings of the Art Museum of Estonia examines 19th-century artistic images of historical events as sources for researching art culture and the knowledge and awareness of the history of that time. The joint approach of historians and art historians to “historical images” provided the key for examining the development of religious, national and patriotic emotions via visual sources, primarily in the Baltic area and in the related German and Russian, as well as Lithuanian-Polish and Scandinavian, cultural spaces.

The twelve articles about historical images and their meanings and the two papers introducing the restoration-popularisation of historical images investigate historical images in various Estonian and foreign museums and memory institutions which have been “silent” for decades. The journal emphasises the significant role of exhibitions and the new discourses emerging from these exhibitions, as well as the existing text-based (cultural) history research and discourses.
