The Virgin Mary: Mother, Woman, Queen

This book is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and her image in the art and visual culture of medieval Livonia (today’s Estonia and Latvia). The story of the Mother of God forms the axis of the book, introduced through works of art: the magnificent northern German and Netherlandish altarpieces, statues, paintings and small archaeological objects in Estonian and Latvian churches and museum collections. All of them originated from the churches of medieval Livonia, and all these works of art possess their own narratives and paths through time. The book includes illustrations of over fifty medieval works and objects from Estonia and Latvia depicting the Virgin Mary and her family.
