The book accompanies the exhibition “Roman style. Maneristic graphics from Estonian collections in the Mikkel Museum (21.10.2017–11.03.2018) and offers readers the opportunity to see most of the 16. images of charming and highly masterful engravings of the 20th century. The book contains a voluminous article on the nature of Mannerism and Mannerist graphics from Arkadi Ippolitov, a prominent Russian art historian and collector of Italian graphics at the State Hermitage. This article is the only published article in Estonian about the art of that period.
There are relatively few prints of the Mannerism period in Estonian collections, but by compiling graphic pages from different collections, it was possible to present a versatile whole that reflects many important topics and trends in dealing with Mannerism. The reproduced works come from the collection of the Estonian Art Museum, the Estonian National Library, the National Archives, private collections, and a significant number of important works come from the collections of the University of Tartu, which are currently divided between the University of Tartu Library and Art Museum collections. For the first time, the book “Roman Style” publishes all these works together, creating a broad-based overview of the Mannerist graphic art found in Estonia.
