Proceedings of the Art Museum of Estonia 2 (7)
This special issue of the Proceedings of the Estonian Art Museum has grown out of the international research and exhibition project “Bosch & Bruegel. Four traces of one painting ”(2010-2013). The serious work that was done in preparing and carrying out the project attracted the attention of the scientific community as well as the general public in Estonia and abroad, and brought worthy prizes to the Estonian Art Museum.
However, the most important thing about the Bosch & Bruegel project is the fact that it introduced the term “technical art history” into Estonian art history and deepened the discussion on issues such as: what is the importance of technical research technical possibilities for making art more understandable to society, etc.
Estonian art historians-conservators have been researching and introducing the material side of works of art in cooperation with their Eastern and Western colleagues for decades, but never before has it been as topical as it is today. After all, the technical tools of research and databases that compile research results are improving every day, and interdisciplinarity has become a key word in understanding a phenomenon or object.
